Fire curtains provide effective and discreet fire protection

Fire curtains are almost invisible in everyday life, but are very effective in the event of a fire
. Fire curtains are suitable for all types of buildings from offices and hotels to listed properties.

Fire protection is one of ALUX's specialties, and the company has supplied fire protection solutions for a hotel on the new North Island.

"We have delivered 21 Ei 60 fire curtains and 2 fire blinds to the hotel. The fire curtains consist of two steel side rails and a polyester fabric with different layers of material. When the fire alarm sounds, the curtain is lowered and the fabric lasts for up to an hour and ensures that the heat is not transformed through," says Ole Bredahl from ALUX, sales manager for fire protection in Denmark and product specialist for the company's fire protection products.

At the hotel, all fire curtains are installed in front of firefighter elevators. The elevators have two exits, the fire curtain goes down in front of the elevator and the firefighter can enter the elevator and exit through another door. But towards the large room where the fire typically starts, the fire curtains descend and protect the fire from spreading up through the floors.

"The fire curtain is a small system that can be built in so you don't see it on a daily basis, and it's a product that architects are happy with. It can be used almost anywhere - hotels, office buildings, canteens - anywhere you need fire protection that is also discreet. In industry, however, you typically use fire blinds that can withstand more handling and can go up and down daily," says Ole Bredahl, who has been with ALUX for over 25 years.

architects integrated the fire curtains into the building. It's a really nice solution that you don't notice," Ole Bredahl points out.

Fire louvres approved for burglary standards

Fire curtains have been widely used over the past 10 years. ALUX does not develop the products itself, but is in close contact with suppliers in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, who are very open to suggestions. Currently, ALUX is having one of its suppliers test huge fire curtains for Copenhagen Airport, which are around 11 meters in length. The test will ensure that no harmful particles are emitted as the curtains will be used on an escape route.

"The latest addition is our fire blinds, which are now approved in the RC3 and RC4 burglary and security standards. This means that the fire blinds meet requirements for both fire safety and burglary, which is completely new. They consist of two layers of steel with insulating material in between, which means you have to cut a large manhole to get through, which takes too long for the burglar once the alarm has gone off," says Ole Bredahl.
