Insurance companies' best friend: Stopping break-ins since the 80s

When a shop in town is closed, it's usually very easy to see because there are bars on all the windows. But that wasn't always the case.

Back in the 1980s, there was more disco, wider pants and bigger hair. But there was also a big problem. There were too many break-ins.

In particular, shop burglaries were a problem for insurance companies. It was getting really expensive for them with all the things they had to compensate shop owners for. So they made a cry for help. And Alux was ready to help.

Alux in Silkeborg are experts in securing houses and shops against theft. One of the ways they do this is with aluminum grilles that roll down when the shops close. They started doing this back in the 80s and are now the market leader in the Nordic region.

- "The insurance companies came to us in the early 80s and asked if we could put up some of these grids, because they were now paying so much money to the stores in compensation that they wanted to secure the stores further," says Billy Jensen.

The company was the first in Denmark to have its safety systems checked at the Danish Technological Institute. They started doing this in 1983.

Safety and security

The CEO hammers everything he can into one of the new security grilles. There's a loud bang, but it's not exactly because he's getting through. Quite the opposite, in fact.

- If the burglar comes and he wants to get in. He just can't. Even if the thief were to get his fingers underneath, it can withstand 300 kilos of force, so it's not easy to get through," says the company founder.

Alux is currently working on a security solution for the new Norwegian National Museum in Oslo. It's a really big job, and it's hard to get it right.

- We don't know how many floors the building will end up being, but we are working with four floors. There are 99 large windows that need to be secured, so it's a big task, says Jan Baisgaard, technical draftsman at Alux.

In addition to security systems, Alux also makes awnings and patio covers. Among other things, they have just covered the outdoor area at the Roxy Malt Pub in their own town, Silkeborg.
